Dr. Cathy Rosenbaum Elected President, American Holistic Medical Association Cincinnati Chapter - January, 2009
Local doctor of pharmacy (pharmacist) Cathy Creger Rosenbaum has been named President of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) Cincinnati Chapter. The chapter meets quarterly and offers a reception, networking, and clinical program to holistic physicians, non-physician holistic professionals, other holistic practitioners, and the lay public, all of whom believe in the principles of holistic health and healing. Dr. Rosenbaum hopes the AHMA chapter will fill a void in the current healthcare model by offering the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky community an opportunity to meet holistic and integrative practitioners up close and personal. Chapter meetings make our holistic colleagues more accessible to the general public. Holistic professionals and practitioners, in turn, support each other with positive energy and encouragement.
Prescription drugs are running our lives and Americans are worshipping at the pharmacy (and the supplement) altar! In her private consulting practice at Rx Integrative Solutions, Inc, Dr. Rosenbaum provides evidence based medical information and coaching to her patients regarding prescription/OTC medications, herbal products, vitamins, other dietary supplements, nutrition, exercise, emotional, social, and spiritual health. Dr. Rosenbaum works with physicians and teaches back-to-basics lifestyle strategies that don't require MORE medications or mega dose supplements to promote wellness.
Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses care of the whole person--body, mind, and spirit in healing. In practice this means that each person is seen as a unique individual, rather than an example of a particular disease. Disease is understood to be the result of physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalance. Healing therefore takes place naturally when these aspects of life are brought into proper balance while the root cause of the health issue is addressed. The role of the practitioner is as guide, mentor and role model; the patient must do the work--changing lifestyle, beliefs and old habits in order to facilitate healing.
Dr. Rosenbaum believes in holistic health. Here are the key principles of holistic health:
- Optimal health is the primary goal of holistic medicine.
- There is healing power in love.
- Healing involves the whole person - body, mind, spirit - not just an illness.
- Prevention and wellness are promoted as health goals as each are involved in the journey toward healing.
- People have an innate power to heal themselves in body, mind, spirit with the right coaching and direction from a holistic practitioner.
- Holistic health is relationship-centered and focused on the unique individual needs of each patient.
Holistic, integrative, complementary and alternative medicine are terms that are often used interchangeably. For perspective, integrative medicine starts with the conventional Western model of disease, and encompasses other healing methods, such as use of herbal preparations, biofeedback, acupuncture and other systems of treatment. Complementary medicine also involves other systems of treatment, in relationship to the central model of conventional Western medicine model of drugs and surgery. By comparison, alternative medicine systems as stand-alone options unrelated to Western medicine examples include traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Finally, complementary and alternative therapies include but are not limited to; nutrition, herbal medicine, spinal manipulation, body work medicine, "energy medicine," spiritual attunement, relaxation training and stress management, biofeedback and acupuncture. The list of what is considered complementary and alternative therapy is constantly changing as more research becomes available.
