Stress Management and Change Management

Stress and Change Management = education, motivation, and empowerment

We all need some stress in our lives to accomplish everyday tasks and be productive in our chosen careers. Acute stress is different than chronic stress. Most of us are pretty good at acute stress management, but need help with chronic stress management skills. We tend to ignore chronic stress until it becomes a physical problem. Interestingly, chronic stress may be caused by boredom or lack of control in some people, and constant interruptions, deadlines, or pressure to do more with less, in others.

Chronic stress also comes from the accelerated rate of change in corporate America within the last 10 - 15 years. This change has created undeniable pressures and stressors for employees trying to work within such a dynamic culture. Often times, employees feel a loss of job security and predictability in their work place. Physical signs of stress include frequent headaches, butterflies in the stomach, dry mouth, frequent colds, skin problems, high blood pressure, rapid breathing, tightness in the chest, excessive sweating, irritability, depression, and difficulty sleeping. Managers need to learn stress management techniques and help their employees cope with stress and change and stay cool under pressure.

Stress-related chronic illness is becoming more common in the workplace, and estimated to cost the United States over $200 billion each year in healthcare dollars. 75% - 90% of all visits to health care professionals are now recognized as stress-related. With an average of $4,500 per person for annual health care, stress can account for up to 10% - 20% of their health plan costs as well as the corporate bottom line. When employees feel like their workplace is changing faster than they can cope, they begin to work in crisis mode and become victims of circumstances beyond their control. Their paradigm for life skills falls to zero and they have to start over and build up confidence again. Employees who are provided with education, motivation, and empowerment tend to navigate their stress, allowing more focus, energy, productivity, and performance quality. These employees ultimately become accountable for their professional work lives and take delight in their work as a result. They can find emotional clarity in the heart of workplace change. As managers, you will find the rewards of retaining a high quality workforce. Become a leader in this exciting and growing discipline!
